I eat a big breakfast before each stage, usually oats, eggs, nuts and lots of coffee! Get it in you at least 1.5 hours before the race. Pack gels and bars with you so you don’t run out of energy before a feed station. The trick is to not get hungry or bonk. Once the tank is empty it’s hard to fill it up again. If it’s hot bring extra water and if it’s wet bring extra clothes.
After each stage recovery is important, if you don’t replace the calories and protein you will have no strength for the next day. A leg massage and a foam roller will be helpful.
After each day I check over my bike and look for cuts or nicks in my tires. I clean and re-lube my drive train and give my bike a test ride before I go to bed so it feels exactly like it did that morning. If you don’t have the knowledge about bike maintenance use the on site mechanics services -they are pros and let them deal with your bike. That will give you more time to relax and reset.
One of the coolest things during ST6 is the people you meet and the experiences you share. After day two you will know who has similar fitness so get to know the people in your group, encourage each other and make the best of each day. Take turns leading the pace line or give a hoot and holler when things are sketchy or exciting.
I am super excited to have Single Track 6 and the racers come through our beautiful Kootenay playground. Ride and smile!
